FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where is The Village Charter School located?

A: The Village Charter School is located at 219 N. Roosevelt in Boise. This is our main building and grades K-4th attend at this location. Grades 5-8th attend school at our additional facility at 420 S. Orchard Street in Boise.

Q: What is a charter school?

A charter school is a free, public school that is founded by a group of people and authorized either by a school district or the Idaho Public Charter School Commission.  Charter schools typically offer innovative teaching methods that are different than what is currently being offered in other public schools.

Q: How is a charter school different than a magnet school or traditional public school?

A: The main difference is in each schools organizational model.  Charter schools operate as their own autonomous district under the State.  TVCS was authorized by the Public Charter School Commission and is governed by a local Board of Trustees.  Magnet schools operate under a large public school administration that also oversees multiple other public schools within the same district. While both charter schools and magnet schools can offer unique instructional programs and approaches, charter schools typically have more flexibility than other larger district operated schools.

Q: How is The Village Charter School different than a neighborhood school or a magnet school?

A: The Village Charter School has a focus on Leadership that includes teaching the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  Our adacemic program is hands-on, challenging and engaging curriculum and real world applicable. We offer a four day school week with a one week break the first part of October and a two week spring break, in additional to traditional holiday breaks.  We also have a dress code of Khaki's or Navy bottoms with any color polo for a shirt.  On Thursday's we offer an interest based elective program in grades 1-8 offering classes such as sewing, cooking, geocaching, videography, etc. that are primarily taught by parent volunteers.  This is just a very brief overview, to learn more about our focus, click on the "Focus" tab above.

Q: Do the teachers at The Village Charter School have degrees in education?

A: Yes, our teachers are all credentialed and in the middle school our teachers are highly certified.  Several of our Paraprofessionals also hold credentials or are working toward Elementary Education degrees.

Q: How many classes and teachers are there per grade?

A: We have two classes per grade in K-6, and one class per grade in 7th & 8th.

Q: How many students per classroom teacher?

A: The maximum class size per grade is as follows: K-1st: 24 students per grade, 2nd-3rd: 26 students per grade, and 4th-8th 30 students per grade.  We also have part-time Paraprofessionals in the classroom during direct instruction time.

Q: If The Village Charter School is located in Boise School District but I live in Meridian district, will my children be able to enroll?

A: The Village Charter School’s primary attendance area includes part of Boise School District and part of the Meridian School District.  If you reside within The Village Charter School's primary attendance area (boundary), you receive a higher priority for the lottery than if you don’t. (Please refer to the”Boundary” link under the "About" tab for specific attendance area information.)

Q: If I do not live in The Village Charter School’s primary attendance area, do my children have a chance of being enrolled?

A: Yes. As we are a young school, sometimes crazy things happen in the lottery.  Also, if your children are in the upper grades, they have a better chance of enrolling as out of district students.  Preference is given to students who reside within our primary attendance area, however, students residing outside the primary attendance area are also welcome to attend TVCS.

Q: What can I do to ensure that my children get in?

A: We accept applications year round for the current school year.  Please call the office for classroom space availability 336-2000.  To apply for our lottery, the first step is to completely fill out an Enrollment Request form on our website before the open enrollment period ends (find under the the 'Enrollment tab').  A lottery drawing takes place after the enrollment end date for any classes where the demand exceeds the spaces available. If you are signing your students up after the lottery, your student/s will be added to the waiting list for their grade and offered enrollment on a first come first served basis.
